So it was only natural that when I started thinking about the task of decorating my very own office, I immediately turned it into a pinny party and fired up the search engine. Where better to find my perfect office than Pinterest, home to all things glam and gorgeous?
It turned out to be an incredibly helpful exercise, too, which surprised me. At the heart of things I just love looking at beautiful photos of beautiful spaces, but when I looked back again at my Home Office inspiration board, a few commonalities jumped off the page at me:
- I'm a linear thinker. Nearly every photo I pinned featured boxy, linear bookshelves in a major way. Most were crammed full with books, office supplies, binders... even artwork... all neatly lined up and orderly like someone was taking attendance.
- Home is where my books are. All my favourite spaces look like libraries.
- Light and bright is where it's at. Specifically, it seems I'm a sucker for huge windows, but a lick of white paint will do too.
- I clearly have a "type". Where I thought I was pinning a bevvy of photos that dramatically differed from one another, it turns out they all look exactly the same. With a few variations here and there. But still... basically identical. Which is good news! It means I know what I like.
They seem so obvious when I think about it -- all four couldn't be more true about me -- but I'm not sure I would have been able to distill it so simply were it not for my Pinterest therapy session. Here are just a few of my faves.

We basically have the desk in the first photo, minus the middle leg. We took it from Alan's parents' garage so I don't really know its origin, but it's aged and weathered and beautiful. The problem is, we need two desks in our space and I can't find another just like it. So I'm searching Pinterest for office inspiration as well. I really love that last one too, minus the peninsula separating the two desks.
ReplyDeleteLOVE the last one and the one with the red credenza. You don't want to see my office....it's a total disaster! One of the only rooms I've done absolutely nothing with since we moved almost four years ago.
ReplyDeletePS - how is it that I just realized I wasn't already following you on Pinterest? Could have sworn I was....but I am now!
I desperately need to redesign my home office as well. Oddly enough, I've been using your recent office pins as inspiration. ;)
ReplyDeleteI am in LOVE with the second photo. I want to live there. Forevvvvver.
ReplyDeleteWe plan on building an 'office nook' in our unfinished basement sometime in the future so I'll have to keep an eye on your upcoming office planning posts!
Love your inspiration offices, especially the one with the multiple globe pendants - such a great look! When I designed my office, it had to be a place that would inspire creativity. I ended up with a different layout than I'd originally planned because it turned out I had to add a drafting table. I love how it came out. I blogged about it a few years ago here on my first blog:

Have fun designing your office :-)
I like the spaciousness and the texture of the furniture in photo #3, but looks kinda “busy.” I’d choose photos #4 and #7 because it has the key factors for an ideal home office: spacious, well-lit, and focus on functionality.
